Blog 4: Interview Preparation

1.  Who do you plan to interview?  Why?

I''m planning to interview Karen Fothergill. She's a Senior Environmental Scientist at Upland/Small Game Program. The Upland/Small Game Program she's in is currently under the Game Species Conservation Program In California'a Department of Fish and Wildlife. Wishing to become a wildlife biologist, I'm planning to get at much advice from her from how to get started to the very end which is actually getting a job , in such a competitive career.

2.  You have to ask 5 questions.  What additional questions do you plan to ask?  Ask open-ended questions.

Do you have a master's degree?
Does she enjoy working outdoors in remote areas?
How does her job care for and manage our nation's wildlife resources?
How did you get started in this career?
What type of projects in college did you have to do while receiving your education?

Blog 3: Topic Choice and Semester 1 ESLR Goals

1. List your topic here:
Wildlife Conservation

2.  What do you plan to do this year to show growth in each of the ESLRs?  Be specific and use an example.  Examples can come from senior project, model assembly, core, and/or participation in senior class ASB or other organizations on campus (clubs etc).
  • As a iPoly Citizen, I will begin to participate in variety of  community service opportunities such as cleaning the city of Pomona through the Beautification Day Program and involving myself more to protecting our ecosystem by joining Amigos de los Rios. I will be helping at the blood drives at school even though the committees are full, I'm a Redcross Volunteer since 2012 and will continue to visit numerous schools and help with their blood drives located in L.A County. This year I plan to increase my basic citizenship duties, from holding the door for someone to donating plasma every two weeks for children and people with cancer.
  • As a  Effective Learner, it is critical  that I give my utter attention to those that are going to mentor me throughout this year. Instead of just focusing on learning by simply listening, i'll begin to rehearse information using other skills as in verbally and visually. Despite spending time in class, I'll begin to join study groups to gain practical experience and deepen my understanding of the topic. Thus being said i'll start teaching others what I've learned when we do have after-school study sessions.
  • As a Effective User of Technology, I plan to take highly take advantage of this technology evolution that has occurred throughout this nation's educational system. Ipoly students have the privilege to obtain such means, therefore when research through the internet for my senior topic, I'm going to make sure I find effective articles and use the internet to my advantage. I'll use sources found on the internet that can help me throughout senior year for example Kahn Academy, to fully understand a topic.
  • As a Effective Communicator, I will begin improving  my verbal communication skills. When discussing in class, I'll make sure to express my opinions and ideas to others because effective communication throughout a classroom will lead to a effective classroom. Being involved in the muffin sales and hopefully the blood drives will allow me to practice my communication abilities to further enhance them.

2.  Contact Information
Magda Nava (909) 282-3205

3. What questions were raised because of the 10 hours of experience?
What type of sanitation issues can occur if the process of waste management is not followed precisely?
Is it better a septic tank in your home or have it connected to the sewer?
Is the government involved with environmental remediation?

4. What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?
The most important thing I learned from this experience is the knowledge of waste remediation. This process, a quite dirty one if I can add, involves numerous skills to perform. From speaking with distraught customers that have homes with fecal matter coming out of every drain to working approximately 18 hours a day on pumping septic tanks. I then gained the knowledge of where the contents of people septic tanks go, which was in approved landfills or even sometimes its used to grow your food.

5. How did what you did help you choose a topic?  Please explain.
This mentorship allowed me to become more involved with recycling and carry for our planet. Our use of inorganic fertilizers  result in negative environmental impacts which can easily be avoided by efficiently managing our feces and urine, to create a organic compost. I wish to become a animal conservationist, but I must first create a environment that can be sustainable and efficient for these animals, which was why this mentorship helped me choose a topic.
